In a modern corrugated board system, the paper rolls are automatically replaced by a splicing device (also called a splicer). The name comes from the English word "to splice," meaning "join" or "splice" - a nautical term used to join ropes or for weaving eyelets.
While the old reel runs on one arm of the unreel, the new reel is ready for replacement. The beginning of the web of the new reel is pulled over a roller into the "adhesive carrier," sucked through a vacuum and ready to tape the sides.
